For the week of March 9, 2008, the news:
- Sleep here, earn miles. Europe-based hotel group WorldHotels has tied up with Malaysia Airlines to offer bonus miles to guests at five of its properties in the region. "Under a joint promotion with the Malaysian national carrier's Enrich programme, guests of can earn extra frequent flyer miles points by staying at the Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh as well as the Furama Resort Danang, Hanoi Daewoo Hotel, Imperial Hotel Hue and the Sun Spa Resort in Vietnam and the One World hotel in Petaling Jaya."
- The Reds have gone to the greens. New York Times travel writer explores the expanding golf presence in Vietnam. "As a bunch of Australians gathered over a barbecue nearby, he told me that teaching the Vietnamese about golf has been perhaps the industry’s greatest challenge.... 'Ten years ago, no one knew what golf was,' Mr. Puchalski said. 'Ten years ago, you’d be arrested for talking about your money.'"
- Southeast Asia tops for ecotourism. Al Gore would feel right at home in the region. "While it's difficult to estimate the region's share of this growth, experts say that examples like a solar-powered lodge in Sumatra, Indonesia, and a conservation-focused tour of the Sukau rainforest in Malaysia are indicative of a growing trend to provide tourists in Southeast Asia with culturally sensitive and environmentally friendly vacations."
