Labuan Island in Malaysia was hotly contested towards the end of World War II. Australian forces landed here beginning in June 1945, commencing Operation Oboe Six.

The Aussies landed near the town of Victoria, and met stiff resistance in "the Pocket", an area of swampy jungle, where the Japanese 371st Battalion decided to make a last stand.

Over a hundred Australian troops met their end during Operation Oboe Six; many of them are honored in the War Memorial on Labuan Island (seen above), which was constructed after the war to commemorate Australian officers and men who were killed during the retaking of Borneo from the Japanese.

When you're done paying your respects to the honored dead, you can go explore the rest of Labuan Island's many attractions, the best of which are outlined in this article: Things to Do in Labuan Island, Malaysia. For more on Labuan, an overview of the island can be read here: Labuan Island, Malaysia.
