I've blogged before about Jakarta, Indonesia's Car-Free Sunday scheme, which is a great way to catch the local atmosphere in Indonesia's capital city. The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta (compare rates|buy direct) not only looms over one of the focal points of the route (the Bundaran HI roundabout), it also joined in the fun last January 29 with their "I Love Weekend" campaign.
Over 250 red t-shirt-wearing bikers sped off down Sudirman Road and headed to Senayan Roundabout, kicking off a charity fun bike event sponsored by the Mandarin Oriental through their Corporate Social Responsibility Program.
More on the event's beneficiaries - and a fun Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta promo for Car-Free Sunday participants - after the jump.
The event was held in aid of the "Drive Books Not Cars" program which supports Jakarta's street kids (pictured above), and Taman Bacaan Pelangi, an organization that establishes and operates small children's libraries in remote villages on Flores. Proceeds from the tickets sold during the Fun Bike Event (and books contributed by Mandarin employees) have been donated to these charities.
Among the participants of the Fun Bike event were Jakarta Deputy Governor Syahrul Effendi and Celebrity Chef Farah Quinn. The Fun Bike event continued off the highway with games and a wide range of prizes up for grabs, including stays at Mandarin Oriental Hotels in Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.
