Christmas in Singapore, 2008
Holidays in the Tropics - Shopping and Sightseeing

By Michael Aquino, About.com

Christmas in Singapore starts early: by Mid-November, Orchard Road is lit up, parades have been scheduled, and everybody's looking forward to the New Year countdown at Marina Bay! The following activities are scheduled from November to early January.

Christmas Light-Up: A Sweet Christmas in Singapore

This year, Singapore is lighting up Christmas with a candy theme: "A Sweet Christmas in Singapore" decorates Orchard Road and the Marina Bay with the illuminated adventures of "the Sweet Family".

As a result of the Sweet Family's arrival, Singapore's shopping and business district has been re-created into a glowing candy fantasy-land, complete with candy cane street lamps, gumdrops, and cupcake houses.

The traditional Christmas Light-Up is supplemented with Sweet Family activities in the Orchard Road area:

  • Sweet Family Meet and Greet: Shoppers can have their pictures taken with the Sweet Family from Fridays to Sundays starting from November 28, between 7pm to 11pm.
  • Sweet Huts: Candy huts along Orchard Road will conduct sweet-making demonstrations, dispensing traditional Singaporean confections like dragon beard, or more conventional treats like ice cream.
  • Open Top Bus Tour: Tourists can ride a special open-top bus to view the Light-Up through a ten-minute ride down Orchard Road. Just collect your free tickets at Singapore Visitors Centres at Changi Airport, Orchard Road, and other distribution points.
  • Extended Hours: Stores will also extend their operating hours to accommodate last-minute and night owl shoppers.

Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2009

The Esplanade Waterfront and the Marina Bay Floating Stadium will be the center for New Year celebrations in a few weeks, as the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown kicks off with music, dancing, and fireworks.

While admission is free at the Esplanade Waterfront, tickets will be sold for the Marina Bay Floating Stadium event. For more details, visit their website: Marina Bay Countdown.
