North Jakarta is where Old Batavia started – the nucleus from which the modern megalopolis known as Jakarta spread out and grew. There are a number of good reasons to prefer a stay in North Jakarta: the shopping at Mangga Dua and Chinatown; the cultural haunts clustered around Fatahillah Square; and the fun to be had at Ancol. If any of these diversions appeal to you, then you’ll probably want to stay in one of the Jakarta hotels listed below.
The Ibis Jakarta Mangga Dua offers 214 standard guestrooms of somewhat smaller-than-usual size; on the other hand, the hotel's close proximity to the sprawling Mangga Dua shopping centers outweighs the compact room sizes. From the hotel, the rest of North Jakarta attractions can be reached easily via taxi; Ancol SeaWorld is fifteen minutes away.
Free (and fast) Wifi is included in the rooms. The La Table restaurant is open 24 hours, and serves both Western and Asian dishes. For more details, read our review of the Ibis Jakarta Mangga Dua.
The Media Hotel & Towers (formerly the Sheraton Media Hotel and Towers) features 351 guestrooms, one of which is advertised as "the most luxurious penthouse in Indonesia". Its Northern Jakarta location places it within shooting distance of Mangga Dua and the Jakarta International Expo, although there are no other restaurants or convenience stores within walking distance.
Guests enjoy privileges like in-room massage treatments and butler service. Other amenities include a jogging track, tennis courts, a karaoke room with butler service at the Yacht Club bar and lounge, and "the Exchange", the hotel's in-house business center.
The Aston Marina's serviced residences provide suitable lodgings for families traveling to Jakarta who want to stay close to Old Jakarta surrounding Fatahillah Square, and within a few minutes' drive to the entertainments at Ancol and the shopping at Mangga Dua. The management actually provides a free shuttle service to Ancol Marina Park, with discounts at Dufan, Atlantis, Seaworld and Fantastique.
The small lobby stands in direct contrast to the roomy units, which come with fully-equipped kitchenettes and free Internet access. The Aston's other recreational amenities include a health clob, sauna, and a pool.
The Mercure Convention Centre Jakarta stands right in the middle of the Dreamland Ancol Park, providing guests direct access to Ancol's golf course, theme parks, and markets. Mangga Dua's shopping stands about a five to ten minute drive away, depending on the macet (traffic).
The Mercure's seaside location means great views for some of the 434 guestrooms in the complex: guests can choose from Superior rooms with park views; Deluxe rooms with a choice of park views or ocean views, or spacious Studio rooms with park views and ocean views. 54 non-smoking rooms available on request.
The Best Western Mangga Dua is one of the tallest hotels in North Jakarta, towering 33 storeys over the shopping district of Mangga Dua. (The hotel provides regular shuttle service to ITC Mall.) 168 guestrooms come with all you need; rooms at the higher floors can see clear to the ocean if facing north; south-facing rooms get great views of the sprawling Jakarta metropolis. Other amenities include laundry service/dry cleaning, coffee shop, and elevator (which is one of the few reasons for complaint: elevators in the Best Western Mangga Dua are not the fastest in town.)
