The original Hotel Indonesia was constructed in 1962, under orders from then-President Sukarno, a former architect who was also responsible for other Jakarta landmarks like the Monas and the Istiqlal Mosque. (The “HI” in the name of the nearby Bundaran HI rotunda comes from the hotel’s old initials – Hotel Indonesia).

Today, after new management under the Kempinski hotel group, the former Hotel Indonesia is once again a showcase of modern-day Jakarta.
