Ti kuih, a Nyonya banana-leaf-wraped pastry that also takes a lot of labor to prepare. "This is sticky and is steamed and eaten with dessicated coconut," Lingzie tells us. Ti kuih (also known by its other name, nian gao) is offered to the Kitchen God for rather devious reasons.
"Because the Kitchen God will ascend to Heaven to give a report about the family's behavior," Lingzie explains, "we serve the sweet sticky ti kuih in hopes that the Kitchen god's mouth will be too stuffed and stuck to report." Little kids love the story almost as much as they love stuffing this sticky pastry into their mouths!
