Corregidor was a thriving American community before the war. Its residents enjoyed creature comforts such as movies, automobiles, baseball games, an electric train system, and a swimming pool. (Check out Dr. Selma Calmes' Lost Corregidor website for an intimate look at life in Corregidor before the war.)
The business and social center of this community was found on Topside. The island's parade grounds are right in the middle of Topside - around it are the ruins of the Mile Long Barracks and the Cine Corregidor (the old moviehouse for resident American troops and their families), as well as the Pacific War Memorial, its museum, and the Eternal Flame sculpture overlooking the bay.
