Hotels in the Heritage District, Singapore
History at Your Doorstep - Hotels for All Budgets

By Michael Aquino, About.com

The Heritage District is the historical and literal heart of Singapore: guests staying at hotels in this area enjoy an enviable proximity to Orchard’s shopping attractions, the Financial District’s business opportunities, and the cultural novelties of Little India and Chinatown.

The hotels featured here are arranged according to price, and represent a wide range of budgets and accommodations. Rates are subject to change and serve as a reference only.

Check out our Map of Heritage District Hotels, Singapore to see the exact locations of the hotels listed below.

1. Fragrance Hotel - Selegie

Part of the budget-minded Fragrance Group of Hotels, the Fragrance Hotel on Selegie Road is perfect for the visitor who only needs a place to crash. Rooms and bathrooms are very small and not soundproofed, but the hotel is quite close to the Little India MRT Station, seven minutes' walk away from Mustafa Market, and ten minutes' walk away from Orchard Road.

The Fragrance Selegie Hotel's 120 rooms come with TV/DVD combo, broadband internet, safety boxes, and laundry service. The rooftop swimming pool is a welcome plus.

2. Hotel 81 - Bugis

Welcome to the frill-free zone - six rather compressed floors with compact rooms (some with no windows), nonexistent closets, and bathrooms so tight, the showerhead points almost directly over the toilet! The hotel is also situated next to a karaoke joint, so don't expect to find absolute peace and quiet in this place.

Consider, though, what you get for the low, low price - central location, clean rooms, in a colorful neighborhood (the clientele includes not a few gentlemen bringing their lady friends up to their rooms). Rooms come with an LCD TV, DVD player, telephone, mini-kettle, hair dryer, and complimentary bath set.

3. Summer View Hotel

Expect little more than Spartan facilities, curt service, and small rooms - however, if you're looking for nothing more than a place to park your stuff while exploring Singapore's retail choices, the Summer View is a good choice. The room has the basics: clean (but small) bathroom and reliable air conditioning.

Burlington Plaza and Sim Lim IT Mall are practically next door, and the rest of Singapore is just a bus ride away - the nearest MRT station is a seven-minute walk away.

  • Price: From $135
  • Address: 173 Bencoolen Street, Singapore 189642

4. YWCA Fort Canning Lodge

If budget is consideration number one, you can't go wrong with the YWCA-managed Fort Canning Lodge. Rooms are clean if Spartan, and the staff is very friendly (surly service is usually the standard in Singapore for this price bracket).

Guests can choose from 212 rooms, all of which have IDD phones, mini-fridge, TV, and air conditioning. The other facilities in the hotel are quite impressive, if basic - buffet breakfast (don't expect a lot of choices), sizeable pool, and self-service Laundromat.

  • Price: From $143
  • Address: 6 Fort Canning Road, Singapore

5. Albert Court Hotel

The Albert Court Hotel is actually a series of refurbished shophouses, and the management does a good job of bringing the hotel's old-world feel to life. Intricate Peranakan-style carvings and décor grace the Albert Court's rooms, coexisting with the usual hotel accoutrements (TV, minibar, IDD phone, broadband internet).

Guests can walk to Little India MRT Station to reach the rest of the island, or explore the attractions nearer the hotel like the Tekka Mall and Sim Lim Square. Other facilities include F&B outlets, a gym, and a Jacuzzi with a steam room. Caveat: the staff could really use a little friendliness training.

  • Price: From $147
  • Address: 180 Albert Street, Singapore 189971
  • Phone: +65-63393939

6. Bayview Hotel Singapore

A decent, no-frills choice for a low price, but you get what you pay for. Expect clean rooms with TV, IDD, mini-bar, and personal safe; free internet; and curt service from the help. Guests can enjoy the hotel's other facilities: a sauna, gym, and a rooftop swimming pool.

The best part of the Bayview isn't what's inside, but what's right outside it - guests enjoy close proximity to the MRT, Orchard Road, Raffles Hotel, Little India, and Fort Canning Park. Plenty of excellent (and cheap) dining choices nearby, so you can give the restaurant food a miss without too much guilt.

7. Rendezvous Hotel Singapore - Clarion Collection

Rooms and facilities are a bit dated, but the central location and reasonable rates compensate for any shortcomings. From the hotel, guests can simply walk to Bugis Village, Raffles City, or Orchard Road to see the sights. The in-house restaurants are too expensive, but not to worry, there are a lot of good cheap eats nearby.

The staff is generally very helpful - the concierge in particular is a great help in arranging your exploration of the city-state. Other facilities include a gym, swimming pool, and in-house moneychanger. If there's a downside, it's the inconsistent internet - some days it just doesn't work at all.

  • Price: From $188
  • Address: 9 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189559

8. InterContinental Singapore

A hotel created out of refurbished shophouses made over in Peranakan style. The InterContinental's elegant old-world décor makes for a nice laid-back contrast with the surrounding hustle-and-bustle of the Bugis district.

The rooms are spacious and well-appointed - cable television, IDD phones with fax and internet, hairdryer, personal safe, and dreamy soft down feather pillows. A word of warning: some guests may have trouble with the room-key activated elevator (a security feature that limits access to non-guests).

9. Naumi Hotel Singapore

Very few boutique hotels can execute a look that is both Asian and cutting edge, but the Naumi pulls it off. With only forty suites, the Naumi can afford to pay attention to the details: guests enjoy widescreen LCD TVs in their exquisitely-appointed rooms, among other perks (Nespresso coffee maker, fully-furnished cooking area with hot plate, microwave, and crockery, to mention a few).

The Naumi distinguishes itself with its innovative ideas (ladies-only suites), to-die-for guest perks (rooftop infinity pool with breathtaking views of the city-state), and location (close to Raffles City Mall, Bugis, and CHIJMES).

  • Price: From $308
  • Address: 41 Seah Street, Singapore 188396

10. Raffles Hotel

Raffles' high price is worth every penny for guests who want to have an intimate encounter with Singapore's colorful history. Every detail is soaked in details from yesteryear -gleaming white facade, a wonderfully-restored old clock in the lobby, and rooms with period furniture, deep Oriental carpets laid over teak floors, monogrammed bedlinens, and bathroom towels bound in gold cord.

The hotel's dining facilities are worth the sticker shock, but let's face it, you have never actually been to the Raffles until you have a drink at the Long Bar, where the legendary Singapore Sling was invented.

  • Price: From $730
  • Address: 1 Beach Road, Singapore 189673
