Shopping Centers near City Hall and Marina Bay, Singapore

By , About.com Guide

Modern Singapore was founded in the City Hall and Marina Bay area - here you'll find not only the city's most prominent historical sites, you'll also find towering office buildings and some of its finest shopping areas, too! Tech geeks go to Funan DigitalLife Mall for their latest gear, while fashionistas get their fashion fix in Suntec City or Marina Square. All the malls featured in this list can be easily reached from City Hall MRT Station.

1. The Adelphi

The Adelphi's proximity to City Hall MRT Station and the Colonial district make it a good rest and shopping stop after a day seeing the city center. The building mixes office and retail throughout its ten floors. Locals value the Adelphi for its stock of entertainment equipment and stores offering spa services, beauty services and accessories.

2. Bras Basah Complex

Located just across Raffles Hotel, Bras Basah Complex may be dark and slightly run-down, but don't let that put you off. Bras Basah is the place to stop if you're looking for cheap books, or if you have an art attack coming on (Bras Basah Complex's art supplies shops are the best in the island). Especially recommended are Evernew and Lido on the first floor, and Knowledge Book Centre on the third floor.

Address: 231 Bain St

3. CHIJMES

CHIJMES was formerly a Catholic convent, specifically the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ), which was first built in 1903. In 1997, the building was reopened as a combined retail and dining venue. The stores offer a good mix of arts and crafts products - especially notable is Peter Hoe Evolution, a store selling a fine selection of batik clothes. Once you're done shopping, drop by the CHIJMES Fountain Court for a great al fresco dining experience.

4. CityLink Mall

Dozens of underground passageways link Singapore's malls - CityLink takes the idea one step further by being a mall and an underground passageway that connects Marina Square and Suntec City Mall! The stores range from specialty shops like skincare and bath store H2O+ to high-end luxury goods like Godiva Chocolatier and L'Occitane.

5. Esplanade Mall

The Esplanade isn't just Singapore's quirkily-shaped arts venue, it's also a bustling retail district. The Esplanade Mall's shops stick to the "arts" theme the structure was intended for, showcasing crafts and products from all over the world. The Esplanade has a few gems: the Tatami Shop sells genuine tatami mats from Japan, and the Naturalist offers custom-made bath and beauty products.

6. Funan DigitalLife Mall

Funan DigitalLife Mall is the more expensive one of Singapore's two IT retail areas (Sim Lim Square is the other, cheaper site). Not that it doesn't have any good deals - well-established computer brands like Compaq, Apple, Sony, and HP call Funan Mall home. Key retailers in Funan Mall include electronics superstore Challenger and Apple Premium Reseller Multimedia Integrated.

7. Marina Square

Marina Square Shopping Mall's four levels of retail therapy offer over 300 shops for your perusal, including the Planet Traveller, Asia’s largest lifestyle travel store. Other anchor tenants include Zara, Mango, MUJI, and TopShop.

Marina Square's central location places it right smack in the middle of world class hotels like the Pan Pacific and the Mandarin Oriental, and a few minutes' walk away from the Singapore Flyer; a new MRT station (Convention Centre station) will soon make the mall even more accessible to visitors.
