Wat Yai Chaimongkon is notable for, among other things, its “boulevard of Buddhas”, a courtyard lined with a series of saffron-wearing Buddha images. The Wat is one of many splendid ruins remaining from the former capital of what was then called Siam, built in the 1300s by King U-Thong. The city was overrun and destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767.

Today, the ruins of Ayutthaya are recognized by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
