Rawai Beach was the first beach resort in Phuket, dating back to the days when the rest of Phuket's west coast was too undeveloped and dangerous to drive through. Today, it's far less commercialized than the rest of the island, and is still a local favorite. The Thais enjoy the seafood served on tables alongside the beachfront, although a significant expat community also calls this area home.
Rawai also serves as a launching point for boat trips to the islands surrounding Phuket. Go northeast to Hat Laem Kha to hire one of the many longtail boats standing by, and go visit Koh Lon or Koh He.
From downtown Phuket, you can take a songthaew from Ranong Road for 20B. By tuk-tuk, the journey costs about 150B.
