The Rex Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City

About.com Rating 3.5

The Bottom Line
The Rex Hotel is pleasantly kitschy, but the hotel wasn’t built to be one, and it shows through its difficult-to-navigate layout. Great location at the heart of Saigon (er, Ho Chi Minh City). Adequate facilities, and the rooftop bar more than makes up for the Rex's shortcomings.

Guide Review - The Rex Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City

Would you believe the Rex Hotel used to be a Renault service station? When the Cold War took hold, the US Information Agency took over, then left at the close of the Vietnam War. Now, after years of neglect, the Vietnamese Government decided to refurbish the building, bringing you the Rex Hotel as we know it today.

The Rex hotel's rooms are large and air-conditioned against the Saigon heat, but traffic noise filters through to the rooms facing the road. (Remember to ask for rooms facing away from the street.) The décor is definitely dated – bamboo tiki kitsch with the occasional baroque touch.

The friendly service and the hotel rooftop bar and restaurant more than make up for these shortcomings. Stay there awhile and watch the sun set over the Saigon river with a cup of the Rex Hotel’s excellent coffee. Or approach the tour desk and arrange for a tour to the Mekong Delta, if you want to experience Vietnam up close.

The Rex’s central location overlooking Fountain Square puts its guests in the right place to explore the best part of the city by foot. You can walk to the picturesque People’s Committee House (the opposite of the Rex, a former hotel turned into a government office) and other storied sites in the area.
